Pearl City Thunder – Babe Ruth 14-Year-Old World Series Champions

Congratulations to the Pearl City Thunder from Hawaii who are the newly crowned 2017 Babe Ruth 14-Year-Old World Series champions after shutting out West Linn, Oregon 13-0.

Pearl City Semi Champ PhotoBrayden Hiraki delivered the “lightning” from the hill to earn the championship win for the Thunder.  Hiraki pitched 5 complete innings allowing 3 hits with 8 strikeouts.

The Thunder dominated West Linn at the plate pounding out 10 hits in the ball game.  Jerin Poopaa went 3-3, with 3 RBIs.  Joshua Fournier batted 2-3 with 3 RBIs.

The Thunder scored 3 runs in the bottom of second and third innings before exploding for 7 runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Over seven days, the boys played six games, and went undefeated, outscoring their opponents, 51 to 4.

“In Hawaii, I feel like the other teams are better, giving us more of a challenge than the ones in the World Series,” said Hiraki, of the competition this year.

Coach Daren Akiyama said age is the difference.  “Last year, the Thunder lost in the championship game and they’ve been in the semis before too,” said Akiyama.  “Experience, they year you could see the maturity.”

Kelena Sauer was the tournament’s MVP.  “It took us like five years just to get to a World Series and win the whole thing,” he said.  “So, it feels really good.”

The team had to overcome jet lag, and the heat and humidity that they’re not used to.  The temperature was in the 90’s everyday with high humidity.

“Nobody understands the weather,” said Akiyama.  “The weather conditions were really tough for the boys but they pulled through.”

The Hawaii Thunder baseball team returned home to about 50 cheering fans the day after they captured the tournament title.
