West Raleigh Captures 10U Championship

In the championship game of the 2017 Cal Ripken 10-Year-Old World Series, West Raleigh, North Carolina, scored four runs with two out in the third inning against favored Pearl City, Hawaii.  After tacking on one more run in the fourth, Pearl City was staring at a five-run deficit with only three more guaranteed innings in a 5-3 defeat.

Pearl City then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but their biggest opportunity came in the bottom of the fifth.  The Hawaiian baseball club had bases loaded with no one out, and down by two.  After back-to-back plays at the plate, then a flyout to centerfield, Hawaii failed to score.

“It was tough,” Pearl City manager Kendrick Noda said. “We had our chances, but we couldn’t bring them across.”

In the bottom of the sixth, Pearl City brought the tying run to the plate, leaving without a score.

“I’m so proud of these boys, I couldn’t be happier,” West Raleigh manager Rich Van Tassel said.  “This is one of the best feelings in the world, you can’t beat it.”
