The "World Series of Cars" is a fundraising event that assists the Jamestown Committee in hosting the Babe Ruth World Series. The World Series of Cars is recognized as one of the best regional car shows in the Northeast. Up to 400 cars show up, and it is a wonderful walk through the history of the automobile. The event is presented each year with support from the Chautauqua Lake Region Antique Automobile Club of America and the City of Jamestown.
Participants traveled several hundred miles to take part in the 32nd Annual World Series of Cars, which was held on June 26, at Bergman Park in Jamestown, New York. A pancake breakfast was available from 7 to 11 a.m. and a chicken barbeque was served from 12 to 4 p.m. There were additional food concessions, door prizes, an automobile related flea market and special attractions rounding out the event.
Thirty-two years ago while attending a car show in Pennsylvania, three friends and antique car enthusiasts, Rod Williams, Les Ostrander and Dr. Charles Sinatra, decided to start a car show in Jamestown, presenting the idea to the Chatauqua Lake Region Antique Car Club.
The very first car show was organized with help from sponsors and the Jamestown Parks Department. From the outset, Russ Diethrick came aboard the planning committee and brought along the Babe Ruth World Series Committee.
The Jamestown World Series of Cars is still one of the largest judged shows in the area. All of the judges who cover the many classes have extensive knowledge and experience in the automobile field. Memorable treats were Babe Ruth's car, a GT-40 Ford race car, and a few electric cars.
It takes several months to organize the show each year. Committees range from flea market to finance, judging, door prizes, set up, concessions, announcing, trophies, public relations, drawings, registration, volunteers, tickets, dash plaques and advertising.
The idea these three men had 32 years ago has grown into a huge show of great importance. All the proceeds are donated to the Jamestown Babe Ruth League World Series.
