HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY

In 1951, ten men who believed that the future of their community depended upon the proper development of the young people met at the Yardville Hotel in Hamilton, NJ for the purpose of developing a baseball program for young men between the ages of 13 and 15 years old.

Babe Ruth League, Inc. recognizes Marius D. Bonacci as the Founding Father of the program, along with the contributions of the following nine men: Samuel M. Welch, Ferdinand J. Wagner, Ed Jones, Ted Jasek, Cliff Fovour, Boots Snyder, William Dombrowski, Maskill Paxson and Willard Carson, Jr. These ten men formed the Hamilton Township Little Bigger Baseball League, the forerunner of Babe Ruth League Incorporated. On May 14, 1951, the first ever Little Bigger League game was played between Homedell Civic Association and the White Horse Fire Company at Switlik Park. From that first game on, the ten team league played before enthusiastic crowds, so much so that in the next year league president Willard Carson Jr., submitted an article to the Sporting News seeking interested parties to form a national baseball league for this age group. Ninety-eight municipalities responded to that article and the rest is history. Today, over 900,000 young men and women in over 7,300 leagues take part in Babe Ruth Baseball nationwide; and it all began here in Hamilton, NJ.

Located nearly an equal distance from NYC, Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore, Hamilton is a vibrant community of 90,000 residents. With easy access to I-95, I-295, I-195 and the Jersey and Pennsylvania Turnpikes, Hamilton is the logical choice for businesses and individuals looking for convenient transportation options, great shopping, recreation alternatives, historic sightseeing and overall quality of life.

With its sheer size, 39.4 sq. miles, Hamilton enjoys the richness of many distinct neighborhoods which carry their own special character and history. From North Crosswicks to the South, where the British and Colonials fought fierce battles during the Revolutionary War to Hamilton Square to the North, home to Vets Park and The Abbott House with its collection of artifacts from Colonial times. Hamilton is also home to the Stewart Johnson Grounds for Sculpture, Kuser Mansion, the Isaac Pierson House and the beautiful Sayen Gardens.

A host of regional historic, cultural, recreational, and sports attractions also await visitors to Hamilton. Within a short drive one can visit Princeton University, College of NJ, Waterfront Park (home of the NY Yankees AA Trenton Thunder), Six Flags Amusement Park, and numerous Revolutionary War battle sites including Washington Crossing State Park and sites in Trenton and Princeton where two of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War took place. With all this to see you will still need to save time to visit NYC, Philadelphia and yes ... Atlantic City.

As the birthplace of Babe Ruth Baseball, Hamilton was indeed proud to host the 2001 Babe Ruth World Series for we truly wish to honor those who have created this fine organization that has so positively impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of young people throughout the United States.
