Baseball and Softball are meant to be enjoyed by everyone, especially the participants. The game has to be fun. In order for the game to be fun, participants must learn the basic fundamentals through enjoyable practice sessions, making them look forward to playing the game. To properly teach the fundamentals, coaches have to be trained.

One of the best training tools I've ever seen is "The Ripken Way" CD-ROM. "The Ripken Way" CD was produced jointly with Ripken Baseball, and Babe Ruth League, Inc. The video portion of the CD-ROM was taped at a coaches' clinic in Williamsburg, Virginia and features baseball legend Cal Ripken, Jr., and major leaguers Bill Ripken, John Habyan, and Joe Orsulak.

Developed by Cal Ripken, Sr., one of the most effective clinicians of our time and father of Cal, Jr. and Bill, "The Ripken Way" is a way of teaching the game by breaking it down to its most basic form: the fundamentals. It revolves around four principles:
1) Keep It Simple, 2) Explain the "Why", 3) Keep It Fun, and 4) Celebrate the Individual. The key to the Ripkens' success stems from their father's principle: "Perfect practice makes perfect." If a player hasn't practiced a skill and performed it successfully over and over during practice, how can he be expected to accomplish that skill during a game?

With this CD-ROM, even a novice coach can teach the skills properly to young players. This CD-ROM is quite unique. You will find it to be so much more effective than a coaching videotape. Why is that?

"The Ripken Way" is like having a coach's encyclopedia at your fingertips. With an hour and a half of available instructional material, you can view as much, or as little, as you would like in one sitting. Then at a later time, you can go back to the CD-ROM, and with just a couple of clicks, go the exact point you left off. This feature also will allow you to go directly to any specific skill you may want to review after you have already seen it. The easily navigable menu allows you to choose the topic you want to cover at that time, and unlike a VHS videotape, the CD-ROM will then take you directly to that topic, regardless of where it is on the CD. You can even go directly to a specific point within that topic. No rewinding, fast forwarding, or searching for the point you are looking for. Just point and click.

While you are viewing a particular lesson, bulleted notes on the lesson will appear. Each bullet point will be highlighted in red as it is demonstrated and discussed on the video portion. The format is much like the picture-within-a-picture technology on your television. The video is playing in a large box, while the printed notes are appearing to the side. If you need to see a portion of the video segment again, just click on that specific summary note. You can replay any portion over and over without having to rewind!

For example, let's say you've already watched the Hitting portion of the CD-ROM, or, perhaps you are the team's pitching coach and are not interested in the Hitting lesson. You would simply load the CD, and immediately click on "Pitching". The video will begin to play and notes will begin to appear. However, right now you have only 5 minutes before you go to practice and today you want to cover pitching mechanics with your pitchers.

Just click on the "Lesson Topics" button. Under Pitching, you may choose from the following: Introduction - 4 Seam Grip - 2 Seam Grip - Mechanics: 5 Links of the Chain - One Knee Drill - Tee Drill - Power Position Drill - Breaking Ball Grip - Breaking Ball Mechanics - Change Up Mechanics. These topics appear in a list. Click on "Mechanics: 5 Links of the Chain".

John Habyan will appear and discuss pitching mechanics. As he does, the notes will appear to the side of the video in bulleted form. John will demonstrate pitching mechanics while discussing and demonstrating how to teach them. He begins with the feet. On the side of the screen you will see, "#1 Feet." As he goes on with the lesson the following notes will come up on the screen and be highlighted in red as he covers each point: Heel Contact with Rubber, First step Should Be Smooth, Head Stays Above the Pivot Foot, Make a Full Pivot.

Habyan also discusses what coaches should look for if a pitcher is off his game, and how to make the needed adjustments.

At any time, and depending on your needs and level of experience, you can print off the summary notes (bulleted), or you can print the entire lesson written out as if reading a book. Just click on your preference.

Suppose a term is used with which you may be unfamiliar, such as "Crossover Step", for example. No problem. Just click on "Glossary", find the term and read the description and instruction, then go back to where you were in the video lesson.

If you have more time available, just click on the lesson topic, like Pitching, and watch the entire segment as it flows. You don't need to click from topic to topic. That option is available to you if you are looking for a specific point, but otherwise, you can just let the video play like a VHS or DVD.

What is so exciting about this educational tool is that it is like having a videotape or DVD, outline notes for the video, and a book all in one tool. And, it is easier to use than either a videotape or a book. The video portion is very high quality like watching your own TV, but no VHS is going to give you the outline notes to read as you go along, and neither a VHS nor DVD can provide you a complete printout of the lesson point by point.

This CD-ROM is like having four separate videotapes in one. Normally, a coach would have to purchase a Hitting videotape, a separate tape for Pitching, and then get two more VHS tapes for Infield Practice and Outfield Practice. At the very minimum, that would be $80 without any printed material. However, Babe Ruth League, Inc. is offering this superb instructional tool at a special price of $29.95.

If it sounds like I am excited about the "Teaching Baseball…The Ripken Way" CD-ROM, I am. No coach should be without this outstanding instructional tool. Most important, this CD-ROM will teach coaches how to confidently hold an instructive and enjoyable practice session.
