BECAUSE OF THE KIDS!
LOCAL LEAGUE AND TOURNAMENT COMPETITION
Let’s make it a shared goal to dedicate
the 2006 season to our kids by offering the
best youth baseball and softball experience
possible. Every child deserves to have special
memories. Babe Ruth League, Inc. is about
providing a positive environment so our youth
can develop their skills with an optimistic
outlook and respect for the sport, each other
and everyone involved in the game. Advancing
their personal development through team participation
and kinship is an important step along their
road to success.
Please be advised that Babe Ruth Headquarters
has extended the Charter and Franchise renewal
period. All 2006 Declaration of Continuation
of Charters and/or FranchisesDCC’s postmarked
on or before June 1, 2006 will
be eligible for 2006 tournament competition.
In keeping with our shared goal
for 2006, the more leagues we keep in the
program and the more new leagues we get to
join Babe Ruth League will equal more children
having fun while participating in the great
games of baseball and softball. Therefore,
if you haven’t chartered your league for the
2006 season, please do so now so the kids
in your community can take part in the Babe
Ruth Experience!
Choosing a Tournament Team
I am sure at an upcoming local league meeting
one of the main topics of discussion will
be the selection of your league’s tournament
team players, managers, and coaches. This
selection comes entirely under the jurisdiction
of the local league. You will want to make
sure that the selection criteria you use are
as fair and
impartial as
possible and that it reflects a player’s performance
from the season, and his or her potential
during the tournament trail. If you want to
be successful in tournament competition a
league should select its very best players.
In order to avoid controversy, you will want
to be sure to eliminate “political” selections
or the appearance of political selections.
SELECTING A TOURNAMENT
MANAGER
Listed below are some recommended methods
for selecting the tournament team manager:
- The winning team manager of the previous
year is given the first opportunity to
manage this year’s tournament team.
- All your team managers vote to select
the tournament manager.
- Board of Directors or the Executive
Committee select the manager.
- Whichever manager’s team is in first
place by a pre-determined date be given
first opportunity to become the tournament
team manager.
The manager, once selected, should be allowed
to choose his own coaches for the tournament
team from the rostered coaches and managers
in the league. A manager or coach, before
accepting the position with the tournament
team, must be sure he has the time to fulfill
the obligations of the position.
SELECTING A TOURNAMENT
TEAM
Listed below are some recommended methods
for selecting the tournament team players:
- Have each league manager send 5 players
to a tournament team tryout, conducted
by the manager and coaches of the tournament
team. The manager of the tournament team,
along with his coaches, will select the
team he wants to take into tournament
play from among these players.
- Have each manager submit a list of who,
in his opinion, are the best 15 players
in the league. Let each manager vote on
every player submitted. If, after voting,
there is still an excessive number of
players, give the manager and coaches
of the tournament team the opportunity
of making the final cut after conducting
several practices. REMEMBER! The
managers work all year with the players,
therefore, they should be given them the
full responsibility for selecting the
best players in your league for tournament
competition.
- In selecting the players, you want to
make sure they are able to stay with the
tournament team should your team be fortunate
enough to advance through each level of
tournament competition. It is unfair for
a player to take a position on the tournament
team knowing he or she is going on vacation.
It eliminates another player who is committed
to the entire season from being selected
to the team.
- If a player, manager or coach leaves
on his own accord, he may be replaced
upon presentation of written approval
from Babe Ruth League, Inc. to the tournament
director. The replacement player, manager
or coach is eligible beginning at the
next level of tournament competition.
The player, manager or coach replaced
is NOT eligible for further tournament
competition and replacements must meet
all tournament eligibility requirements.
Proof of inability of player, manager
or coach to continue must be presented
in writing by the league president to
Babe Ruth League, Inc.
- Babe Ruth League, Inc. strongly recommends
each league take a full roster of players
into tournament competition. Once your
league has participated in tournament
competition you may replace players, managers
and coaches between tournament levels,
but a league may not add players.
Rules and Regulations Regarding Replacements
for Manager/Coaches and/or Players:
If a player, manager or
coach leaves on his/her own accord, he/she
may be replaced upon presentation of written
approval from Babe Ruth League, Inc. to
the tournament director. The replacement
player, manager or coach is eligible beginning
at the next level of tournament competition.
The player, manager or coach replaced
is NOT eligible for further tournament
competition and replacements must meet
all tournament eligibility requirements.
Proof of inability of player, manager
or coach to continue must be presented
in writing by the league president to
Babe Ruth League, Inc.
The methods for selecting
your tournament team players, managers and
coaches are completely at the discretion
of the local league. A good baseball or
softball experience begins with you.
Remember, we must help make the childhood
years as educational and fun as possible.
I think most of us would conclude that our
happiest childhood reflections centered
on group activities that we shared with
our friends or family, or both.
Don’t let your kids miss out - keep the
Babe Ruth Experience
alive in your community!
