THE ULTIMATE ESCAPE!
Is the stress catching up with you? Need
a change of pace? Are you thinking about
how to relax and balance the multiple demands
in your life?
It’s that time of year to starting thinking
about getting away from it all. Away from
work, the phone calls, the daily to do list.
A well-placed vacation can do wonders for
every area of your life. Don’t you owe it
to yourself and to your family to create
the best family vacation possible?
We have the answer!! What could be better
than a family vacation to one of the nine
Babe Ruth World Series sites this August!
Experience the thrill of America’s pastimes
and the locales hosting the Series. A Babe
Ruth World Series offers so much more than
just the thrills of watching teams battle
it out for the win. It’s a great opportunity
for social and cultural exchanges. Many
World Series sites offer a vast array of
vacation options, such as first-rate hotels
(at very affordable prices that were
negotiated just for the Series) and
a wealth of fun outdoor activities for the
entire family.
Listed below are the locations, dates and
some information on each of the 2006 Babe
Ruth World Series:
12U Softball World Series – Varina, Virginia
(Henrico County) - August 11-18, 2006.
Varina is a community whose history dates
back to the beginning of Virginia. In 1607,
a group led by Captain Christopher Newport
sailed from Jamestown up the James River
to a place occupied by the Arrohattoc Indians,
on of the tribes ruled by the Chief Powhatan.
The explorers became the first Englishmen
to set foot in Varina. Henrico has the most
Civil War battlefields of any county in
the United States. The historic Dabbs House
– used as General Robert E. Lee’s headquarters
– still stands and is now the eastern precinct
for the Henrico Division of Police. Henrico
has an extensive network of parks. The Varina
Athletic Association is proud to have the
use of one of the jewels – Dorey Park. The
400-acre property was once one of the largest
dairy farms on the East Coast. Fields are
provided for soccer, rugby, football, tennis,
softball and baseball. Dorey Park also regularly
hosts picnicking families, disc golfers,
fishermen, hikers and horsemen.
16U Softball World Series – Millville,
New Jersey – August 12-19, 2006. Millville
is a small, rural community in southern
New Jersey with a proud history of glassmaking
and community spirit. The community is located
just 45 minutes from Cape May, Atlantic
City, Wilmington, Delaware and Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. Union Lake (built on the Maurice
River and located in the center of the city)
is one of the largest recreational lakes
in the state. The riverfront is open to
the public, with walkways, a boardwalk and
public plazas. Wheaton Village, on the east
side of the city, offers an entertaining
exhibition of life in the Victorian era
with shops and crafts and the world renowned
Museum of American Glass. Millville’s downtown
is home to the growing Glasstown Arts District
which features numerous pioneer artists,
14 studios, a public arts gallery, 40 retail
shops and first class restaurants.
Cal Ripken 10-Year-Old World Series –
Lafayette, Arkansas – August 5-12, 2006.
Lafayette is the place to enjoy Cajun and
Creole music, food and festivals. Being
the hub city of French Louisiana, Lafayette
has an abundance of great hotels, fine restaurants,
as well as excellent shopping centers and
interesting historical attractions. Lafayette,
the heart of Acadiana and the unofficial
capital of Cajun Country, is a metropolis
that displays an extraordinary mixture of
tradition and progressiveness. Having a
rich French heritage blended with Spanish,
American, Indian and African influences,
the city represents a colorful combination
of lifestyles. Lafayette lies 15 miles west
of the Atchafalaya Basin and 35 miles north
of the Gulf of Mexico and exhibits the subtropical
climate typical of South Louisiana. Lafayette
is just a few hours away from the Big Easy,
New Orleans. The city is situated in a geographical
area of forests and prairies interlaced
with bayous, swamps and marshes.
Cal Ripken 12-Year-Old World Series –
Aberdeen, Maryland – August 13-20, 2006.
In 2006, Aberdeen has the honor of hosting
the seventh annual Cal Ripken World Series.
Aberdeen, in Harford County, is closely
located to many major cities. It is only
35 miles from Baltimore’s famous Inner Harbor.
I-95 runs through the center of Harford
County making a trip to Wilmington, Delaware,
Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore or
Washington D.C. only a car or train ride
away. For the sports lovers in the family,
you will be able to play on one of 12 challenging
and unique golf courses, or take in a game
at Ripken Stadium, home of the Aberdeen
Ironbirds, a New-York Penn League affiliate
of the Baltimore Orioles. Or, head over
to historic Havre de Grace, established
in the late 1700’s and visit the antique
shops, boutiques and casually elegant waterfront
restaurants.
13-Year-Old World Series – Hamilton Township,
New Jersey – August 17-25, 2006. Babe
Ruth Baseball is celebrating its 55th Anniversary
in 2006. Since the program was founded in
Hamilton Township, New Jersey in 1951, the
Hamilton Township Babe Ruth League is playing
host to the 2006 Babe Ruth 13-Year-Old World
Series. Located nearly an equal distance
from New York City, Philadelphia and the
Jersey Shore, Hamilton Township enjoys the
richness of many distinct neighborhoods
which carry their own special character
and history. A host of regional historic,
cultural, recreational and sports attractions
await visitors to Hamilton. Within a short
drive, one can visit Princeton University,
the College of New Jersey, Waterfront Park

War battle sites. With all this to see,
you will still need time to visit New York
City, Philadelphia, and yes…Atlantic City.
14-Year-Old World Series – Wilson County,
North Carolina – August 19-26, 2006.
By hosting the 2006 World Series, the Wilson
County Youth Athletic Association will have
hosted five World Series in seven years,
which is unprecedented. Fleming Stadium
is an outstanding site for the World Series.
Built in 1936, it has undergone numerous
changes in the past few years – new seating,
new scoreboard, new fencing and an upgraded
press box, just to name a few. Such great
players as Harmon Killebrew, Carl Yastrzemski,
Rod Carew, Jimmy Fox, Mickey Mantle, Robin
Roberts, Cal Ripken, Sr., and Ted Williams
have taken the field there. Wilson
is the “City of Antiques” and the “City
of Trees,” and has the Imagination Station,
a hands-on science museum. Wilson has 35
public parks, four recreational centers,
3 motion picture theatres, four 18-hole
golf courses, one bowling facility, 40 tennis
courts, and 2 city-owned swimming pool complexes.
13-15 World Series – Clifton Park, New
York – August 18-25, 2006. Located in
Upstate New York’s Capital Region, Clifton
Park nicely embodies all that is good about
suburban living with a fresh blend of cosmopolitan
sophistication. Just 90 minutes away to
the south, resides the home of baseball,
Doubleday Field and the National Baseball
Hall of Fame and Museum. Visitors have the
opportunity to view and relive the moments
that made them fans of baseball again and
again through the museum’s exhibits, displays,
as well as reading the plaques of those
Hall of Fame inductees through the years.
Just minutes to the north, visitors can
take in an afternoon of thoroughbred racing
action at the historic Saratoga Race Course
where courageous horses like Man O’ War
and Secretariat carved their place in history.
The city of Saratoga Springs also offers
superb dining, breathtaking architecture,
and historical treasures. Just a short drive
further north you will find the Adirondack
Mountains, where you can enjoy boating and
water recreation at Lake George. For those
more adventurous, a three-hour drive will
place you in New York City, Boston, Massachusetts
or Montreal, Canada.
16-Year-Old World Series – Monticello,

offers an abundance of leisure and recreational
activities, including a new sports complex

in the world. Monticello also boasts a six-screen
movie theater, a full schedule of cultural
events sponsored by the SEARK Concert Association

comprehensive system of postsecondary education
with academic offerings ranging from technical
certificates to traditional baccalaureate
degree programs.
16-18 World Series – Newark, Ohio (Licking

sunrise across Buckeye Lake to a sunset
over the city, Licking County offers visitors
rural charm and city conveniences. Enjoy
a picnic in the Japanese Garden at Dawes
Arboretum, a hike through the challenging
hills at Blackhand Gorge, or a step back
