INTRODUCING…
THE 2005 HERSHEY DREAM TEAM
Hershey and Babe Ruth League, Inc. are
natural teammates. We both realize that
most fundraising campaigns are run because
of necessity rather than desire. This is
why our relationship has been a success
since partnering in 2004.
The 2005 Hershey fundraising campaign finale
includes the selection of a very special
all-star team, the Hershey Dream Team.
Nine players between the ages of 5 and 12
from throughout the entire Cal Ripken Baseball
Division were selected based on their dedication,
work ethic, sportsmanship and involvement
with their league and community. Babe Ruth
League, Inc. would like to congratulate
the following members of the 2005 Hershey
Dream Team:
Jeremy Davis,
a member of the Boonville Cal Ripken League
in Boonville, Missouri, excels as a pitcher,
catcher and shortstop. This is quite a feat
as at the age of 18 months, Jeremy was diagnosed
with myocarditis, a virus that attacks the
heart. Being the champion that he is, Jeremy
beat all odds and has fully recovered. A
young man with a smile always on his face,
Jeremy was a Missouri state medalist with
the USA wrestling program; a Cal Ripken
all-star for four years and tied the league
batting title with a .628 average.
Justin Eagle,
a member of the Elk Grove Cal Ripken League
in Elk Grove, California, served as a catcher
and outfielder for his team. At the beginning
of the season, Justin attended all practices,
even though he complained of pain in his
leg muscles. When the local league season
began, Justin could only play an inning
or two before he was too weak to play at
all. After being tested and treated at the
hospital and seen by several doctors, a
diagnosis could not be found for the pain.
Eventually the pain moved into other parts
of Justin’s body causing him to be confined
to a wheelchair. Even though Justin can
no longer play the game, he continues to
attend his team’s games to cheer on his
teammates.
Ryan Malleck,
a member of the Beaver Dam Cal Ripken League
in Greater Point Pleasant, New Jersey, loves
to pitch and catch, as well as play at shortstop
and first base. As his league president,
Mr. Joe Mazza brags, “Ryan is a fine young
man and an example for all youth in the
league to follow.” Ryan always takes on
each challenge that comes his way with enthusiasm
and a bright smile. He was a member of his
middle school's cross country basketball
team. He is a good student continually earning
his place on the honor roll. In his spare
time, Ryan serves as a Buddy Ball volunteer.
Stephen Hoagland,
a member of the Southeastern Cal Ripken
League in Lexington Kentucky, is one of
the league’s top pitchers and infielders.
Stephen has played in the Southeastern Cal
Ripken League for eight years, showing up
for every practice and every game. As League
Vice President Barry Bryant indicates, “Stephen
always gives 110%.” His respect for his
fellow teammates, coaches and the adults
in his community certainly demonstrate what
sportsmanship is all about.
James Sokul
(nicknamed Fletcher), is a member of the
Concord Northeast Cal Ripken League in Concord,
New Hampshire. Fletcher enjoys switching
between the positions of pitcher, shortstop
and catcher. His coaches highly regard him
as a team leader. As League President Bill
Boynton pointed out, “Fletcher is
a solid all-around player with the bat,
glove and on the mound. He came back strong
this season after missing two weeks due
to a broken toe.” Besides being an excellent
athlete, Fletcher has received many honors
at school, such as the High Honor Roll and
the Blue Ribbon Academic Award.
John Roberts
(nicknamed Jeb), plays as a pitcher and
a shortstop for the Sachem Youth Cal Ripken
League in Winchester, Massachusetts. As
proudly stressed by Eastern Massachusetts
Cal Ripken State Commissioner Mike Janicki,
“Jeb is an outstanding young man
with poise and intelligence. He would be
an excellent choice for the Dream Team.”
Jeb excels in school and has been
the recipient of many academic honors, such
as the Fenn Scholarship.
Brock Heiston
(nicknamed Charlie Hustle), a member of
the Smithsburg Cal Ripken League in Hagerstown,
Maryland, is always willing to play in any
position, even though he prefers pitching
and catching. Brock is a great team leader.
As many people will tell you, he is a coach’s
dream, always doing what is asked of him
and giving 100% at all times. Brock’s teammates
proudly look up to him. Charlie Hustle
is often seen helping his fellow players
work on their fielding or with any other
aspect of the game. In addition to this
athletic ability, Brock is an excellent
student having received the President’s
Award for Academic Achievement.
Spencer Perry,
of San Jose, California has that winning,
take-charge attitude. Spencer participated
for five years with the North Valley Youth
League. Because of his determination to
exceed and sportsmanlike conduct, during
his fifth season with North Valley he was
moved up to the majors from the minors.
However, within seven months of this move,
Spencer was diagnosed with cancer of the
brain and spinal cord. “Courageous doesn’t
even begin to describe him,” said his mom
Heidi. “He is the bravest kid I have ever
known, and if it wasn’t for Spencer, I do
not think I could have made it through this
ordeal. His strength and determination has
been an inspiration to all of us.” Spencer
is currently in remission, having just completed
his last chemo treatment. And, he
is still an avid fan of the game of baseball,
actively supporting the teams in his community.
Mark Wight,
a member of the Mount Baker Cal Ripken League
in Bellingham, Washington, loves to pitch
when he isn’t playing in the infield or
outfield. Mark was made captain of his team
because of his sportsmanship and positive
attitude. He not only puts his teammates
first, but cheers for plays for the other
teams. From fourth grade to the present,
Mark has maintained an “A” average and is
a recipient of the President’s Award for
Academic Excellence. In addition to being
a great ballplayer, Mark is an outstanding
salesman. He continually tops the league
in sales during their fundraising campaigns.
Each Dream Team player is invited to bring
two guests to attend the 2005 Cal Ripken
World Series in Aberdeen, Maryland. They
are invited to the “Luncheon of Champions”
to be held on Friday, August 12th, and will
be special guests at the games on Friday
evening and Saturday. As an added bonus,
they will take a trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania
on Sunday, August 15th, to enjoy an exciting
and memorable day at “The Sweetest
Place on Earth” – Hershey Park!
As you can see, these young men are very
unique and gifted individuals. Hats off
to them for the goals and success they have
achieved at such a young age. They have
demonstrated that no matter what, we have
the power within ourselves to succeed in
life. Babe Ruth League, Inc. is very proud
to have these young men represent the 2005
Hershey Dream Team!
