Stephen Piscotty Has Been a Rock in the St. Louis Cardinals’ Line-up

PiscottyStephen Piscotty, a graduate of the Tri-Valley, California Babe Ruth League, is a right fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Piscotty attended Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, California, where he played for the school’s baseball team as a pitcher and a shortstop.  In 2009, his senior year, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Easy Bay Athletic League.

Piscotty was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 45th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, but he opted not to sign.  He enrolled at Stanford to play college baseball as a third baseman, pitcher, and an outfielder.  In 2011, he was named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference first Team.  Piscotty also played collegiate summer baseball for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in 2011 and was the Cape Cod League batting champion with a .349 batting average.  At Stanford, Piscotty majored in atmospheric and energy engineering, and completed his bachelor’s degree during the 2014-15 off season.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Piscotty in the first round, with the 36th overall selection, of the 2012 MLB draft, and signed him on June 16 with a $1.4 million bonus.  He made his major league debut on July 21, 2015, and was named the Cardinals’ organization Player of the Year that season.

His first season showed good results as he batted .295 with a .376 on-base percentage, .448 slugging percentage, four home runs, 18 doubles and 27 RBIs.  Piscotty’s first playoff appearance was in the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs.  There, he hit both his first career postseason home run and double in a 4-0 win.  He tied for sixth in the National Rookie of the Year award voting, and was the franchise Player of the Year for 2015.

In 2016, Stephen Piscotty picked up right where he left off in 2015.  His young career stacks up very well with some of his contemporaries after their first 102 games.  Note the table below:

Teams have tried various ways to attach Piscotty, but they have found that the worst thing they can do is to let runners reach base in front of him.020116-MLB-Stephen -Piscotty -PI.vresize .1200.675.high .14  That is when he becomes most dangerous, because he keeps things the most simple.  “There are times when you want to let it rip a little bit, but sometimes you tone it back,” Piscotty said.

Piscotty’s maturity and ability to adapt have been a foundation for the Cardinals.  They knew going into the season they would have to rely on the learning curve of this young outfielder.  So, he has been the one they can count on.

Piscotty has been at his best in the biggest spots, batting .468 with runners in scoring position.  He is hitting .301 overall.  Batting in the No. 2 hole, he leads the team with RBIs.  Rarely does he look like a player getting his first crack at an everyday job.  His approach clicks easily into a lineup with professional-style hitters.

“Stephen has been just a very consistent spot for us,” said manager Mike Matheny.  “He’s got a very simple approach with a lot of ability, and it’s going to be fun to continue to watch him adjust and adapt to this league.”

The Babe Ruth Alumni Association is proud to celebrate the success of its graduates and congratulates Stephen Piscotty on being a valuable contributor to the St. Louis Cardinals.  Hopefully his early stats offer a fair reflection of the many years of success to come his way.
